What Phone Did You Have Before the iPhone Arrived? [Chatroom]

Five years ago today, people were getting their hands on the iPhone for the first time. Know what that means? We all had something that wasn't an iPhone. Or an Android Phone. Or a Windows Phone. So what did you have? Are there any BlackBerry users out there who are using the same phone now that you had back then? More »

Sony buy of EMI gets US OK

Sony now owns the biggest collection of music publishing assets in the world.

The music giant gained that distinction yesterday when US regulators rubber-stamped its $2.2 billion purchase of EMI?s publishing division from Citibank.

The sale caps a rough 16-month period for the storied, 82-year-old music brand ? which had been bank-owned since February 2011 when its former owner defaulted on its loan.

The EMI name ? which used to stand for Electric and Musical Industries ? will be phased out in most regions, the company told The Post, and EMI?s 1.3 million songs, including post-Beatles works of John Lennon, will be reunited with the Lennon-McCartney catalog currently housed by Sony/ATV, a joint venture of Sony and the Michael Jackson estate.

Sony will run the venture but won?t own the entire business. It has a 40 -percent stake alongside a host of investors, including: David Geffen, Blackstone?s GSO Capital Partners, Mubadala Development and Jynwel Capital.

EMI owns the publishing rights to Rihanna and Amy Winehouse and a storeful of other names.

The total asset value of the two companies is between $4 billion and $5 billion, sources said. As part of the deal, Sony agreed to sell Virgin music and Famous Music UK.

Martin Bandier, who once ran EMI and now heads Sony/ATV, described the purchase, approved yesterday by the Federal Trade Commission, as a ?story book ending.?

?I have a free hand to grow and build it,? he told The Post. ?I know the assets and love them, and can hum most of them.?

Bandier declined to talk about possible lay-offs as a result of the combination.

Separately, the FTC and the EU are still weighing Universal Music Group? s $1.9 billion bid for EMI?s music division.

Analysis: Sudan rulers dig in as foes look for Arab Spring

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Outside the University of Khartoum, riot police in blue fatigues perch on pickup trucks, keeping watch as young women in bright headscarves and men in button-down shirts walk by carrying textbooks to class in Sudan's intense summer heat.

Less than a week earlier, the campus - just a few hundred meters (yards) from the national security headquarters - was a battleground. Police fired teargas and used batons to break up hundreds of protesters, who threw rocks back at them.

No one expects the shaky truce to last. After more than a week of anti-government demonstrations fueled by budget cuts and tax increases, Sudan's rulers are digging in. Riot police have been deployed, coverage of protests in local media restricted, and scores arrested, activists and opposition groups say.

It is still far from clear whether the protests, which have rarely mustered more than a few hundred people at a time, will gather the kind of momentum seen in last year's Arab Spring uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East, and so pose a real threat to Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

But the tough response to the demonstrations shows how high the stakes are for Sudan's rulers, already struggling to contain multiple armed rebellions and an economic crisis triggered by the loss of oil output and revenues through South Sudan's secession last year.

In a defiant speech on Sunday - two days after the most widely spread demonstrations yet - Bashir lashed out at the protesters, dismissing them as a handful of agitators whose aims most Sudanese rejected.

"I drove around the capital on Friday in an open car. There was nothing. The people greeted me by crying 'Allahu akbar'," Bashir said. Anyone looking for an Arab Spring in Sudan, he added, was going to be disappointed.

Activists who want to end Bashir's 23-year rule, sensing an opportunity in the economic troubles, have presented a starkly different picture: "There will be no escape from the tidal wave of popular uprising," read an article posted on the website of one of the main activist groups, Girifna ("We're Fed Up").

The country's main opposition parties, although fractured, have for the most part backed the protests to pressure the NCP to open up the political system and end the wars festering in the country's western and southern regions.

An alliance of the rebel groups fighting in those areas has offered to declare a "strategic ceasefire" if the Bashir administration were to be toppled.

Such hopes may still be farfetched, but activists were encouraged last Friday when demonstrations spread beyond the core of students who had dominated them and into a variety of neighborhoods in Khartoum and other cities.

The success of the movement will depend on whether that trend continues, analysts say. Activists have called for big protests this weekend, which will be a major test of their resilience.

RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS

The University of Khartoum, whose brown brick buildings were put up along the Nile by British colonial rulers in the early 20th century, has been a hub of political ferment for decades.

The institution was central to popular uprisings that ousted two military leaders since the country's independence in 1956 - once in 1964 and again in 1985.

Authorities - many of whom were once student activists themselves - are keenly aware of this history and have not been taking chances with the demonstrations.

Scores, sometimes hundreds, of riot police have been deployed to contain even small protests, dispersing them with batons and teargas before they can pick up momentum. Some activists have cried foul, although police and officials have repeatedly denied using excessive force.

Local media has been almost entirely silent about the demonstrations, except to carry official statements playing them down or blaming "foreign elements" for the unrest.

The government, running out of policy options that can both stabilize the economy and soothe discontent over inflation, may have to depend on such security measures to maintain order at least in the short term, analysts say.

"The regime seems largely bereft of ideas of how to regain the political and economic initiative - the time-horizons of the main players have become weeks, rather than months and years," said Harry Verhoeven, an Oxford University researcher who has studied Sudan extensively.

Last week's government move to cut fuel subsidies - which the finance minister described as the act of a "bankrupt state" - showed how serious the fiscal crisis has become.

Politicians have long avoided the measure, which is widely unpopular because many people fear it will stoke inflation.

Officials say they had no choice. The economy - struggling after years of conflict, U.S. sanctions and mismanagement - was hit hard by South Sudan's secession a year ago.

The new nation took about three quarters of the country's oil output with it, erasing most of what was Sudan's main source of foreign currency, state revenues and exports.

The former civil war foes were supposed to work out a deal whereby the landlocked South would pay fees to Sudan to export crude through the north. But the two, caught up in what analysts call a "war of attrition," have failed to agree.

South Sudan shut down its crude output in January after Khartoum started taking some of the oil in place of fees.

EMERGENCY MEASURES

Neglected during the oil-boom years, other sectors of Sudan's economy such as agriculture have failed to make up for lost crude production, leaving the government with few resources to fill an estimated $2.4 billion public finance gap.

With Bashir indicted at The Hague since 2009 for war crimes in Darfur - charges he dismisses as political - Sudan finds itself diplomatically isolated. And if Arab League allies are discreetly helping out, any such aid has been fairly limited.

In an interview last week, Sabir Hassan, chairman of the NCP's economic affairs department, said it took the urgency of the economic situation to finally build the political consensus within the party needed for the new austerity measures.

"It's necessary to start this reform at this time, and if we don't do it at this time, of course, the deterioration will continue," he said. "Things will get worse."

The new measures - which cut fuel subsidies by roughly a third, raise taxes and trim government bureaucracy - aim to halve the expected budget deficit from around 6 percent of gross domestic product to about 3 percent.

The goal, Hassan said, is to "contain the deterioration, and regain economic stability and prepare the ground for sustained growth".

Activists and opposition groups, however, point out the loss of oil was only one factor in the country's economic decline. If not for years of mismanagement, corruption and neglect, they say, things never would have become so bad.

The country's leaders have not proven up to the task of making hard decisions, they say, particularly the sensitive task of cutting into the substantial spending estimated to go to security and defense sectors and local governments.

"If reforms are undertaken to reach political consensus, we might be able to then stop the downhill fall in the economy," Abda Yahia El-Mahdi, a Sudanese economic expert and former state minister at the finance ministry, said.

"If nothing changes in the political arena and the government wants to continue in the status quo, then I think we will see further deterioration in the economy regardless of these austerity measures."

Michael Vick PicGetty Images

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick replaced an injured and ineffective Kevin Kolb in 2010, and led Philadelphia to an 8-3 record while posting a 21:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio and playing terrific football.

Vick took a step back after last year?s lockout-shortened offseason, going 7-6 as a starter and regressing to 18 touchdown passes compared to 14 interceptions. Vick also played banged up throughout the year.

ESPN?s Ron Jaworski studied every snap of Vick?s 2011 season. While there were obvious deficiencies in Vick?s playing style, Jaworski believes Vick is capable of taking a big positive step in 2012.

?This offseason is the most important of his career,? Jaws said on?SportsCenter Friday. ?It?s the first time since 2006 with the Falcons that he will go through the OTAs and training camp as the starting quarterback.?

As Jaws sees it, talent is no obstacle for Michael Vick. He must play with more discipline.

?There is not another quarterback in the NFL with Vick?s dynamic combination of passing skills and explosive running ability. There are some plays only Vick can make. The issue I have always had with Vick has been his willingness to run. To play the position outside of the pocket, outside the structure of the offense. There?s no question he?ll always make plays, but he also leaves throws on the field.?

?I charted all of Vick?s snaps last season,? Jaworski said. ?He was taken to the ground more than 11 times per game. You can?t play 16 games that way. Vick always reminds me of something my former coach, Dick Vermeil, says: ?The problem with quarterbacks who can run is, they run.??

Still, Jaworski suggested that 2012 could go down as Vick?s best season after a full, healthy offseason in the system and as the surefire starter. Jaws believes Vick has a chance to put it all together this year.

?Vick has shown he is capable of throwing the ball exceptionally well from the pocket,? said Jaworski. ?His overall throwing skill set can be top five in the league. His objective in 2012 must be to play?that way more often. It becomes an availability issue. You can?t be an elite NFL quarterback if you can?t be counted on every single week.

?I am really excited to see Michael Vick in 2012. A more disciplined player will result in fewer turnovers. I would not be surprised if we?re getting ready to see the best year of Vick?s ten-year career.?

slideshow On a hot night in Atlanta (97 degrees with 104 heat index), the North Georgia Bulldogs improved to 2-0 with a 29-14 win over the Georgia Falcons thanks in large part to a great performance by the defense

The defense forced four turnovers (two fumble recoveries and two interceptions), a safety?and held?the Falcons on 4th-down four times.

At the half, the Bulldogs led 15-6 on a Patrick Dupree five-yard TD run and a Mike Emerson touchdown catch of 42 yards from quarterback Jamie White who finished 6-for-14 for 92 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The second half was controlled by the Bulldogs except for three turnovers which put an end to offensive drives, two inside the Falcons? 15-yard line.

?We played sluggish for most of the first quarter but as it cooled off some our intensity picked up on offense,? said Bulldogs head coach Mark Bramblett. ?Our defense played great all game

Dupree, a former Coosa High standout, added another TD run (four yards), and White picked up a three-yard touchdown run to finish out the scoring.

Former Calhoun High standout AJ Baker had four solo tackles and one interception, and Kwamaine Winters had six solo tackes, two assists and an interception to lead the defense. Dupree had two TDs on 41 yards rushing. Emerson had three catches for 54 yards and one TD.

The Bulldogs will play their home opener on Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Calhoun Recreation Department Field. Admission is $6, and kids four and under get in free.

According to Bramblett, this week?s game will feature another physical team from the Atlanta area, the Georgia Rams, that likes to mix the run into a quick-hitting passing game. Bramblett said they utilize a lot of motion and different looks offensively to try and confuse the defense. Defensively the Rams run a 4-2-5 look. The Rams are 1-1.

Elements for Success in Team Building Event Planning ...

June 28th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

Elements for Success in Team Building Event Planning PhotoThe responsibility of organising team building events is a huge task for anyone. Everything has to be planned and implemented with sheer precision. In addition to that, team building objectives would need to be incorporated into most activities. This is why the goal of the event must first be identified prior to the planning process.

Once that?s done, it would be best to run a research on the various team building activities that will achieve the intended objectives of the organisation.

Your next step is to pick a venue that has the necessary facilities to run your team building activities.? It may be a good idea to go through the list of locations approved by your corporation before you start making enquiries. This way, you won?t waste any of your time considering venues that will not be accepted. You can also cross check with your colleagues for referrals, as they will possess first-hand experience on the service levels and facilities of the places that you are thinking about.

As a teambuilding event planner, one of your core responsibilities is to create a balance between meeting organisational objectives and boosting of employee morale. One of the ways to do this is to encourage interaction amongst participants, through the activities and games that will be implemented. Holistic participation would be your ultimate goal, which is why these games should be made appropriate for everyone.

Utilising activity evaluation models such as Kirkpatrick?s Learning Model will help you decide if an activity is enjoyable, educational, and applicable while improving performance. Depending on the event objective, there will be many activity options for you to choose from, such as ice-breaker exercises, leadership and management activities and observation and awareness exercises.

Finally, it?s good to make a last-minute list of the tasks that you need to sort out a few days before the event date. For instance, you may need to confirm the number of team building participants with the venue or resort and make a list of the equipment needed for the event.? Ultimately, precision in all of these details would be essential for your success as an event organiser.

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Dog Training Activities ...

What do you have to train your pet dogs except for the canine training collar?

You need the best coaching tips and the virtues of patience and strength of mind

It is beyond doubt that this Dog Training Collar can be an absolute tool for rectifying your dog?s unbecoming behaviour. This contemporary device will help as you conduct daily sessions for your dog.

Talk with your Dog

How will you handle these dog training activities?

You can use positive strengthening so that the dog can learn quicker. Bear in mind that it's not reasonable to compel your pet to do a specific action. But the only real way to connect with your dog is thru body language. You can attempt to look at your dog?s eyes to establish its mood. It's very important for you to establish rapport with your reliable pet. You're the master and the dog will always obey a command that is given correctly. Maintain compassion and never resort to maltreatment or too much toughness. Try to be a leader of the pack since domestic animals rely on their human coachs for steering.

Discover how to Train your Dog

When you put on the dog training collar around your pet?s neck, this signifies the start of coaching lessons. So as your dog starts to learn, you must also learn all about the training details.

The process of coaching pets is not spontaneous. It is an enduring process which comprises understanding the emotions of your dog. To paraphrase, learn how to read your dog?s mind by simply having a look at its face which is often full of expression. Make sure to pay attention to what your pets try to tell you. The dog?s body language indicates that it is ready to listen or if it is bothered by particular things.

After you've acquired this beneficial implement, you can commence with your canine obedience training sessions. If feasible, do it the entire day since irregular sessions aren't recommendable. Ideally, the coaching should be conducted for six weeks on a continuing basis. This may be the key to transforming your dog into a well behaved dog.

Just make sure to teach the dog nice things. Be reasonable and gracious instead of being demanding and harsh on your pet. Keep the training sessions full of enjoyment and laughter. It's a great device for making amendments to your dog?s unbecoming actions. This up to the minute device will complement training sessions that you carry out for your pet.

The Dog Line provides tips in dog obedience training as well as supplies dog keepers with tools like the Remote Dog Training Collar . You can get more relevant information and Training a Deaf Dog on the site of The Dog Line.

Early human ancestor chewed bark

An early relative of humans chewed on bark and leaves, according to fossil evidence.

Analysis of food trapped in the teeth of the two-million-year-old "southern ape" suggests it existed on a unique diet of forest fruits and other woodland plants.

The study, in Nature, gives an insight into the evolution of what could have been a direct human ancestor.

Other early African contemporaries had a diet suggesting a grassland habitat.

The first fossils of Australopithecus sediba, discovered in South Africa in 2008, were hailed as a remarkable discovery.

Teeth from two individuals were analysed in the latest research, focussing on patterns of dental wear, carbon isotope data and plant fragments from dental tartar.

The evidence suggests the ape-like creature ate leaves, fruit, bark, wood and other forest vegetation.

Dr Amanda Henry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, led the research.

"We've for the first time been able to put together three quite different methods for reconstructing diet and gotten one cohesive picture of the diet of this ancient species and that picture is really quite different from what we've seen in other hominins (human ancestors)," she said.

"That's exciting, we're seeing a lot more variation among these species than we'd expected."

Human milestone

Human ancestors from around this time period were probably exploring a wide variety of habitats.

Each species was finding its ecological niche a few hundred thousand years before the evolution of Homo erectus, which spread out of Africa into many different habitats around the world, heralding a milestone in human evolution.

Dr Henry said Australopithecus sediba walked on two legs but probably also spent time foraging in the trees.

"It was still quite primitive; it had a very small brain; it was quite short and it had fairly long arms but it was definitely related to us," she said.

Dr Louise Humphrey of the palaeontology department at London's Natural History Museum said there was debate about the position of Australopithecus sediba in the human lineage.

"The question is, is this a great great grandad or grandma or is it a cousin?

"They were eating bark and woody substances, which is quite a unique dietary mechanism; it hasn't been reported for any other human relative before."

The animal may have eaten fruit and young leaves when food was plentiful, but turned to less nutritious food like bark when times were hard.

However, syrup beneath the bark may have provided a sugary treat.

Dr Henry said: "A lot of people have turned their nose at the idea of eating bark but I always think that what they're eating is probably not the course outer bark but potentially the softer inner bark where the sap is.

"And so if you think of maple syrup - it's the sap of maple trees - then it could have been quite a tasty substance."

The challenge of change initiatives | Ric Willmot Blog

Those in your organisation who are complaining the loudest about your change initiative without regard for the benefits, value and outcomes for everyone might possibly be the ones who are afraid of being ?found out?.

Those in your organisation who are silent and non-commital may not yet be convinced about what you?re telling them in regards to how things will be improved.

This is why change is a challenge. This is why change is difficult.

Change is a process not an event and the change is made by individuals. It?s a highly personal experience for those involved within the organisation and can evoke a multitude of feelings and emotional responses. Because of this more than 70% of change initiatives fail because there wasn?t satisfactory focus on people issues.

The challenge of change initiatives is to create confidence in the hearts and minds of your people.

In a sprawling new story in Popular Science, Tom Clynes takes an in-depth look at the seedy but influential range of people who take it upon themselves to make life a living hell for climate-change researchers. Here, five key takeaways:

1. Harassment is routine
Climate-change deniers often threaten scientists in attempts to distract them from their research ? and the harassment goes beyond nasty emails. One climate modeler describes finding "a dead rat on his doorstep" with "a yellow Hummer speeding away." Last year in Australia, several scientists were ushered to a safer facility when opponents "unleashed a barrage of vandalism, noose brandishing, and threats of sexual attacks on the scientists' children." Michael Mann, director of Penn State University's Earth System Science Center and one of the 2007 joint recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, once opened his mail and "a small mass of white powder cascaded out of the folds and onto his fingers." He went to the bathroom, washed his hands, and calmly phoned the police. Threats like "are so much a part of my life that I don't even realize how weird it is," he says.?

2. Political associations don't matter
For Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist, political conservative, and evangelical Christian, her work can be as thankless as it is taxing. In 2007, Rush Limbaugh discovered her contributions to a book co-authored by Newt Gingrich and ridiculed her as a "climate babe." Following the backlash, Gingrich dropped her chapter on global warming entirely. That's "100+ unpaid hours I could've spent playing with my baby," Hayhoe tweeted.?"There are many times when I wonder if it's worth it,"?she says.

3. Research is often stifled by legal action?
"Those crude acts of harassment often come alongside more-sophisticated legal and political attacks," says Clynes. Climate-change skeptics regularly file lawsuits and Freedom of Information Act requests to disrupt ongoing research. "In 2005, before dragging Mann and other climate researchers into congressional hearings, Texas Congressman Joe Barton ordered the scientists to submit voluminous details of working procedures, computer programs, and past funding," says Clynes.?Essentially, Barton wanted Mann to reproduce and defend his "entire life's work."

4. Climate skeptics pay activists to bother scientists
It's not "a bunch of crazy people" fighting against us, says Mann. "These efforts to discredit science are well-organized." "There's really only about 25 of us doing this," says Steve Milloy, a Fox News commentator and self-described "denier." He calls the core group of skeptics "a ragtag bunch, very Continental Army." The deniers often target scientists who speak up publicly, offering bounties to anyone willing to make their lives difficult. In one instance, Milloy offered $500 for anyone caught on video heckling Mann during the California leg of his book tour. "This whole green thing, the whole environmental scare industry, is really just an ingenious plan to exert government control over everything we do," says Milloy. "I have yet to see an environmental scare that is remotely true when it comes to human health: Secondhand smoke, air quality, ozone depletion, pesticides, Superfund sites ? you name it."

5. And climate-change deniers are well-funded
Following the Kyoto Protocol on global warming in 1998, the American Petroleum Institute put together a $5.9 million task force (which included Milloy) charged with discrediting climate-change science to "quash growing public support of curbing emissions." A leaked memo from the group revealed detailed plans to "recruit, train, and pay willing scientists to sow doubt about climate change among the media and the public." Apparently, the group achieved what it set out to do: In March 2001, President George W. Bush declared that climate change was "too uncertain" to take action on.

Sea rise faster on East Coast than rest of globe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches. But in Norfolk, Va., where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches, the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches, and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet. The accelerated rate along the East Coast could add about 8 inches to 11 inches more, Sallenger said.

"Where that kind of thing becomes important is during a storm," Sallenger said. That's when it can damage buildings and erode coastlines.

On the West Coast, a National Research Council report released Friday projects an average 3-foot rise in sea level in California by the year 2100, and 2 feet in Oregon and Washington. The land mass north of the San Andreas Fault is expected to rise, offsetting the rising sea level in those two states.

The USGS study suggests the Northeast would get hit harder because of ocean currents. When the Gulf Stream and its northern extension slow down, the slope of the seas changes to balance against the slowing current. That slope then pushes up sea levels in the Northeast. It is like a see-saw effect, Sallenger theorizes.

Scientists believe that with global warming, the Gulf Stream and other ocean currents are slowing and will slow further, Sallenger said.

Jeff Williams, a retired USGS expert who wasn't part of the study, and Stefan Rahmstorf, a professor of ocean physics at the Potsdam Institute in Germany, said the study does a good job of making the case for sea level rise acceleration.

Margaret Davidson, director of the Coastal Services Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Charleston, S.C., said the implications of the new research are "huge when you think about it. Somewhere between Maryland and Massachusetts, you've got some bodaciously expensive property at risk."

Sea level projections matter in coastal states because flood maps based on those predictions can result in restrictions on property development and affect flood insurance rates.

Those estimates became an issue in North Carolina recently when the Legislature proposed using historic figures to calculate future sea levels, rejecting higher rates from a state panel of experts. The USGS study suggests an even higher level than the panel's estimate for 2100.

The North Carolina proposal used data from University of Florida professor Robert Dean, who had found no regional differences in sea level rise. Dean said he can't argue with the results from Sallenger's study showing accelerating sea level rise in the region, but he said it's more likely to be from natural cycles. Sallenger said there is no evidence to support that claim.

Rio+20 Summit Sustains Little More Than Sentiment

U.N. General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's Secretary of the Conference Luis Figueiredo Machado and Rio+20 Secretary General Sha Zukang attend the closing ceremony of the Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

The Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development was the biggest United Nations conference ever, but it may be one of the biggest duds. It produced no major agreements ? just a vaguely worded declaration that has been widely derided.

More than 45,000 people registered for the event in Rio de Janeiro, but diplomats couldn't even agree about the meeting's objective until 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, just before heads of state and other high-level delegates started arriving in Rio.

They finally agreed to a long-winded declaration about alleviating poverty and leaving the planet livable for future generations. It was more platitudes than anything else, which sparked anger and disappointment.

Friday, on the final day of the conference, former Costa Rican president Jose Maria Figueres didn't even try to hide his contempt as he addressed the conference's secretary general, Sha Zukang, at a news conference.

"One thousand five hundred CEOs from 60 nations, global NGOs from all over the world, have come to your conference and committed to action," he said. "Those who have failed you, Mr. Sha, are the governments. Those are the ones that have failed you, sir."

Actually, conference organizer Sha replied, he did not intend to defend the conclusions. There were simply too many competing interests. It's not his job to make people happy.

"My job was to make everybody equally unhappy. If one party's happy ... then others are not happy. ... So equally unhappy means equally happy," he said.

Obviously, there is no consensus about what path the world needs to take to pull billions of people out of poverty in a manner that will sustain the environment and leave resources for future generations.

Sha, who is about to retire from his career at the U.N., then asked, what good are big promises, anyway? He pointed specifically to the ambitious pledges made at the big U.N. climate meeting in Copenhagen two years ago.

"Nobody forced you to make commitments. By why comply with the commitments? It's voluntary, but you're voluntarily lying to the people because you're not honoring them," Sha said.

Clearly, the meeting in Rio has raised some existential questions for the United Nations. Achim Steiner, who heads the UN Environment Program, pins lot of the difficulty on a new political landscape.

"Here in Rio 2012, despite, in a sense, the impression that this is still a debate between North and South, between rich and poor, between those who have natural resources and those who don't ? in fact, the world is much more complex," he said.

There's the economic turmoil in Europe and the political divide in the United States. But also, emerging economies like China and India are suddenly big players still trying to balance economic development, the environment and social issues.

So did any good come from Rio+20? Manish Bapna, acting president of the World Resources Institute, says at least the world has agreed to work on a new set of goals to promote sustainable development.

"The next two, three years will be quite a bit of work in trying to define what they are, what they mean, how they can be achieved," he says. "But I think that could be an important outcome that emerges from Rio+20."

While that may sound like more just talk, the reality is that collective goals ? like combating climate change, preserving the oceans and alleviating hunger and poverty ? do require collective action and therefore consensus. The problem, of course, is that talk doesn't keep pace with the rapidly changing conditions on our planet.

Texas US Senate debate features a lot of agreement

Bitter rivals vying for Texas' Republican U.S. Senate nomination traded a few barbs during a televised debate Friday, but they largely agreed on the key issues, including illegal immigration, health care reform and foreign policy.

In fact, the biggest shot of the night came after the debate, when tea party favorite and former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz told reporters that Gov. Rick Perry has only endorsed his opponent, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, because he's tired of working with him and wants him to leave Texas.

Cruz is a fiery orator and former debate champion, and he went on the offensive early in the debate against Dewhust, the mainstream Republican favorite in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Cruz accused Dewhurst of being too moderate and using his position as head of the Texas Senate to kill a bill last year that would have given police more power to ask anyone they detain about their citizenship status -- a charge Dewhurst denied.

Both candidates agreed that the U.S. has failed to secure its border with Mexico, and said they oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants and the Obama administration's new directive allowing many young illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children to be exempted from deportation.

Dewhurst won last month's primary by 10 percentage points but didn't capture an outright majority in a nine-candidate field -- necessitating a runoff election July 31. His race with Cruz mirrors campaigns across the country that have pitted veteran Republicans against little-known challengers, with both sides claiming to represent conservative values.

Friday's debate at KERA in Dallas was the first of at least two planned before the runoff.

The candidates both said they are against the recently approved Texas Republican Party platform that supports a guest worker program for illegal immigrants.

They both promised to try to repeal the Obama administration's health care reform, gave proposals to overhaul social security that overlapped broadly, and pledged to get the federal government out of the way and keep the Environmental Protection Agency from imposing pollution controls they claimed would kill jobs.

They agreed that the U.S. should not commit to military action in Syria, and said that while the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began for noble reasons, they went on too long. Only a bit of disagreement came when Dewhurst said the Obama administration pulled combat troops out of Iraq too soon and should have left some behind.

Both candidates said they wouldn't authorize blanket cuts to the U.S. defense budget to balance the federal budget -- but agreed there were areas where even military spending could be trimmed back. They also agreed on the need to expand energy exploration, with Cruz saying, "unless you are a blithering idiot, that's the right thing to say."

The most awkward moment came when the candidates were allowed to ask each other a question, and Cruz demanded to know if Dewhurst had supported a statewide payroll tax. "I've never supported a wage tax," Dewhurst said. Then he added, "Um..." and trailed off.

Cruz also chided Dewhurst for "repeatedly compromising with Democrats" while overseeing key legislation in the state Senate. Dewhurst responded, "I have never compromised my conservative principles once."

"Now, yes I've negotiated," he added. "I've negotiated to try and get the requisite number of votes so we can pass bills."

Cruz claimed that taxes had increased 49 percent since 2003, when Dewhurst became lieutenant governor. Dewhurst responded that national conservative groups -- including the Club For Growth, which is supporting Cruz -- have rated Texas' tax record excellent in recent years. "It's a fact," he said. "Facts are stubborn my friend."

Also backing Cruz are the Tea Party Express and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Perry has endorsed Dewhurst, who says he and the governor have been responsible for making Texas one of the most conservative states in the country.

But immediately after the debate, Cruz turned some heads when he suggested Perry fought with Dewhurst over state government spending increases and was only backing Dewhurst now because he no longer wants to work with him as lieutenant governor.

"It is in his political interest to get rid of David Dewhurst, and get him out of Austin and send him somewhere else," Cruz said, referring to Dewhurst's time in the state capital.

Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are

This week sees many corners of the globe celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. A man whose contribution to the worlds of tech and gadgets is immeasurable -- a sentiment not lost on Google. Today, geeks and norms worldwide will be waking up to possibly the most complex doodle to date. Can you set the machine and spell out "Google"? If you can, you'll be sent off to lots more information about the man himself. This isn't the only thing Mountain View's done to keep his legacy alive, having previously helped Bletchley Park raise funds to purchase (and display) Turing's papers, and more recently helping curators at London's Science Museum with its Codebreaker - Alan Turing's Life and Legacy exhibition. If you haven't already, head to Google.com and pop your logic hat on, and if you get stuck, head past the break for a helpful video.

Kobo eReader Touch Edition packs bags for Japan, books flight for July

Rakuten's $315 million buyout of Kobo will bear some e-reader fruit come July. The e-tailer's CEO and chairman, Hiroshi Mikitani, announced plans to release the Kobo eReader Touch Edition in Japan next month for 10,000 yen (on par with its $130 US sticker price). Timing is key, of course -- murmurs of the Kindle Touch's Japanese debut haven't escaped Mikitani's notice. "As a Japanese company, we cannot lose (to overseas rivals)," he told The Asahi Shimbun. Rakuten hopes to use the e-reader to export Japanese content, and aims to have 50,000 titles available by the end of 2012. Pre-orders kick off on July 2, with more details to come next month.
