Pitt Football Notebook: Pitt's Nix is charged in incident

Pitt senior offensive tackle Lucas Nix was charged with three summary offenses for a Dec. 26 incident in Pleasant Hills.

Nix was not arrested and did not find out he was charged until Thursday -- the charges were sent to him -- and he was charged with public drunkeness, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

According to a source, Nix's brother, Nate, a former Pitt player, was involved in an altercation with West Virginia linemen Pat Eger and Joe Madsen at Eger's house. Eger, like the Nix brothers, played football for Thomas Jefferson High School and was home on break.

Nate Nix called Lucas Nix to come get him and, when Lucas arrived, he damaged the front door and he, Madsen and Eger got into a verbal dispute. Nix left the scene without further incident, there were no punches thrown, and nobody was injured.

Pitt interim coach Keith Patterson issued the following statement: "I was informed [Thursday] of an incident involving Lucas Nix during the holiday break. Before any determination is made on his status for Saturday's bowl game, I want to make sure I have all the necessary information about the occurrence to make the right decision. Lucas was not arrested and just learned of these summary charges[Thursday]."

A good fit

Patterson could have joined Todd Graham, his college roommate, at Arizona State but decided instead to take the job as defensive coordinator at Arkansas State under Gus Malzahn. He said it was the right opportunity for him and his family. Patterson and Malzahn worked together at Tulsa for Graham.

Healthy line

Pitt likely will have the same offensive line together for the third game in a row -- a rare event this season. "We are [healthy]," proclaimed line coach Spencer Leftwich.

Staying put

Leftwich is not sure where his next job will be, but his family will stay here until at least next summer. That means his son, Mack Leftwich, a junior at North Allegheny High School and one of the top quarterbacks in the WPIAL, will remain at the school until he graduates.

Honor for Gruder

Outside linebacker Max Gruder will play in the East-West Shrine Game Jan. 21 at St. Petersburg, Fla.
