Sweet! New Hamburg Gingerbread Contest winners take home ...

Colourful candies and crunchy gingerbread were transformed into scenes of Christmas last week for New Hamburg?s annual gingerbread contest.

This edible architecture was on display at the New Apostolic Church on Waterloo Street on Nov. 29, as the public came to view the gingerbread creations from local families and businesses. Winners took home over $1,500 in prizes.

Prizes were provided by local sponsors, including Josslin Insurance Brokers and TLC Pet Foods, and others. The New Hamburg Independent provided advertising.

?It was just a feel-good, community event,? said organizer Kathryn Ritz.

Just like last year, a special education class from Sir John A Macdonald high school entered several gingerbread houses. And, just like last year, their prize money was donated to support a charitable cause.

The organizing committee is always looking for new members to help organize next year?s gingerbread contest, Ritz said. The committee will meet next week, to begin work on the 2013 event and choose a new theme. Interested volunteers can contact Ritz at 519-662-2960.
