Plano, TX (PRWEB) November 22, 2012

HomeCEUConnection.com, an ASHA approved provider, is broadcasting a new set of Speech-Language Pathology continuing education webinars live on December 21st and 22nd. Denise Dougherty, MS, CCC-SLP, returns with three interactive sessions covering pharmacology and the swallow, dysphagia in Alzheimer patients and useful tools for SLPs. Registration is now open for all three continuing education webinars.

Ms.Dougherty?s first webinar ?Pharmacology and the Swallow? broadcasts on Friday, December 21st from 3pm to 7pmET. ?Medications often affect the swallow but this may be poorly recognized by the speech pathologist?, she explains. ?Many times it isnt just one pill that contributes to the swallowing difficulties, but it is the combination of drugs ingested?. This course will discuss resources to check for drug/drug, drug/food and drug/herb interactions. Various delivery methods of medications will be reviewed as well as how medications impact the central nervous system.

The second webinar also broadcasts on Friday at 8pmET and runs for 2 hours. ?Evaluation and Management of Dysphagia in the Alzheimer Patient? will discuss the progression found in Alzheimers and the impact on the swallow. Specific assessments/tools will be identified to assist the speech pathologist with the evaluation, development of the functional maintenance plan for the patient and staff/family education.

Ms.Dougherty?s third webinar broadcasts the following day, Saturday, December 22nd at 9amET for 2 hours. ?The SLP Tool Box? provides a review of various speech-language therapy tools as well as a presentation of adaptive cups/spoons with a discussion of the impact on the deficits noted in the bedside evaluation. Ms.Dougherty believes that tools do not have to be expensive or complicated to be effective. ?Speech pathologists utilize numerous tools to provide therapeutic exercise for dysphagia patients. Some are inexpensive and easy to make in the therapy room while others are somewhat expensive?.

Ms. Dougherty received her Master?s Degree from St. Louis University and has completed postgraduate courses at Johns Hopkins University and several doctoral courses at University of Phoenix. She has received numerous ASHA ACE Awards, is a board member of The American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA), and the AAPPSPA liaison for the ASHA Health Care and Economics Committee. She is the Vice President of The American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology and received the Academy?s 2007 Honors Award for achievements.
