The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has just released a free iPad app that allows you to play the part of an epidemiologist. The app called Solve the Outbreak lets you play the detective as you track down the origin of a disease and prevent it from spreading.
The app simulates real life as well as fictional outbreaks and lets you sort out the clues. Decisions have to be made by you. Will you quarantine the affected village? Or do you risk talking to the people who are sick? If the decisions you make in the app are correct then you earn badges and your score increases which will eventually increase your rank from being a trainee to the highest rank possible which is the Disease Detective.
Once you have isolated a bug you can even brag about your achievement by posting the results on popular social sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
There are currently three outbreaks available for you to run through with the agency promising more to come.
The CDC said that they developed this app to help raise awareness among people about diseases and public health work.
Some of the features of Solve the outbreak include
- Learn about diseases and outbreaks in an engaging way.
- See how disease detectives save lives around the world.
- Try your hand at solving an outbreak.
- Post your scores on Facebook or Twitter and challenge your friends to do better
If you like to get a feel of how the experts track down a disease and contain it then you should get this app for your iPad.
You can now download this app for free over at iTunes. You will need an iPad running on at least iOS 5.1 as well as a storage space of 35.3 MB.
