DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) -France has something that other teams envy: an unbeaten record against Spain in competitive matches.

But while France had arguably the better players when they last met in a tournament at the 2006 World Cup, this time the French must find a way to stop the reigning European champions from dictating the game in Saturday's quarterfinal.

That looks even more difficult considering how France's defense capitulated in the 2-0 defeat to Sweden on Tuesday, and the fact it will have a makeshift center half pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Adil Rami for the game.

"We have to believe, even though that will make some people smile after (the Sweden) match," France coach Laurent Blanc said. "If we manage to keep the ball more than Spain it will be an accomplishment, although it doesn't guarantee victory. We have to take our chances."

Tournament history weighs heavily in France's favor.

Les Bleus won 3-1 in the last 16 of the World Cup six years ago, won 2-1 in the quarterfinals at Euro 2000 and 2-0 in the 1984 Euro final. France also beat Spain home and away in Euro '92 qualifiers, and drew 1-1 in the group stage at Euro '96.

Nice for the record books, but of little help on Saturday, especially in the intense heat of Donetsk.

"The problem is that we are going to have to have to run - and run a lot - and also close down space, even though they always seem to find some," Blanc said. "I don't think Spain has just one strength, they have many. I like their way of playing. Not only is it pleasant to watch but it's efficient and spectacular. We have to try and match that, but we're a long way off."

Blanc was impressed by the way Croatia took the game to Spain in their final group game before losing 1-0 to a late goal.

"You need heart when you play Spain," Blanc said. "If you look at Croatia, there was an incredible bond between their players."

That was not the case against Sweden, with France falling apart on the field and then having a bust-up in the dressing room afterward.

"Sweden dominated us in every area, especially in terms of athletic strength, mental strength and even technique," Blanc said. "If Saturday is like that we can expect a very, very hard game."

With Philippe Mexes suspended, Arsenal defender Koscielny is set to make his first appearance of the tournament alongside Rami, who plays for Spanish club Valencia.

Their only full match together was a friendly against the United States last November - hardly ideal preparation to stop arguably the slickest attacking machine in world football.

Still, Koscielny does not seem to be intimidated.

"A lot of players would dream of playing their first game at the European Championship against the defending champion," he said. "Spain and Barcelona resemble each other quite a lot, and I think it helps me to know that I've already faced the players who play for Barcelona."

Choosing the right way to take on the Spanish is difficult. Sitting back invites constant pressure; attacking too much opens up too space for them to exploit.

"If you go all-out attack against Spain then you're in trouble," Koscielny said. "You have to keep it tight against them."

Koscielny is an excellent reader of the game and has the gift of anticipation - something Blanc also had as a defender.

"We want him to bring his qualities to the team," Blanc said. "He will certainly have a lot of work to do against Spain, and a lot of balls to cut out, especially from diagonal passes."

Blanc knows his players must improve drastically after their nerve-wracked performance against Sweden.

"We need to play more simply, dare I say in a Spanish way," Blanc said. "They seem to do it with their eyes shut, and that's called tactical intelligence."

Blanc could make changes in attack, with Mathieu Valbuena a possible choice on the right flank.

"Valbuena can offer us options," Blanc said. "Most of the changes we've made have been on the right."

McALLEN, Texas (AP) ? A 6-year-old boy has died after authorities say he was shot by his mother's boyfriend at a South Texas hotel in an attack that also killed his 1-year-old half-brother, a family member said Thursday.

Jaydin Thompson's great-aunt Dianne Cerny said the boy was taken off life support and died Wednesday evening. Cerny has been speaking on behalf of the family since the boys were shot Tuesday, the same day their mother's body was found hidden in a shack in their hometown.

Jaydin's 21-month-old half-brother, Davian Bluntson, died in the shooting in the Laredo hotel. Demond Bluntson, the younger boy's father, is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault in the attack. Laredo Police spokesman Joe Baeza said the assault charge likely will be upgraded after Jaydin's death.

Bluntson, 36, is being held on $2.5 million bond and could face yet more charges in El Campo where police believe he killed his 28-year-old girlfriend Brandy Cerny ? the boys' mother ? and dumped her body at a property where his father lives.

El Campo police Chief Stanphill said a preliminary autopsy determined Cerny likely died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Cerny and her sons were last seen in church Sunday in El Campo. Dianne Cerny said Davian loved playing and exploring, and described Jaydin as being just like his mother.

"He always had an arm around someone, especially his mom and little brother, and he was always laughing and smiling and loving life," she said Thursday. She said Jaydin's family had decided to donate the boy's tissue.

Brandy Cerny's father reported her missing Monday morning after she did not show up for work. El Campo police called their counterparts in Laredo the next day to check on a lead that the family had checked into a Laredo Holiday Inn.

Laredo police said they later determined only Bluntson and the boys had checked in. Officers knocked on their room door about midday Tuesday and immediately heard several gunshots.

Police say when they entered the room, they found Bluntson had shot and killed Davian and wounded Jaydin. Their mother's body was found hours later, in a green shack hidden among trees behind a small house and a mobile home, on an El Campo property where Bluntson's father lived.

Brandy Cerny's family described her as a compassionate and hard-working woman who had earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and was pursuing a master's.

"Brandy worked tirelessly as a single mother to give her sons every opportunity this world had to offer," Dianne Cerny said.

Dianne Cerny said her niece had ended her relationship with Bluntson, but there was "hardly a time when you saw Brandy without her precious sons."

"Our hearts are forever broken and we as a family speak out against domestic violence and ask that anyone who feels threatened seek the necessary help to break free," she said. "Brandy was in the process of breaking free."

Study: No-fat, low-fat dressings don't get most nutrients out of salads

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? The vegetables in salads are chock-full of important vitamins and nutrients, but you won't get much benefit without the right type and amount of salad dressing, a Purdue University study shows.

In a human trial, researchers fed subjects salads topped off with saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat-based dressings and tested their blood for absorption of fat-soluble carotenoids -- compounds such as lutein, lycopene, beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. Those carotenoids are associated with reduced risk of several chronic and degenerative diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration.

The study, published early online in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, found that monounsaturated fat-rich dressings required the least amount of fat to get the most carotenoid absorption, while saturated fat and polyunsaturated fat dressings required higher amounts of fat to get the same benefit.

"If you want to utilize more from your fruits and vegetables, you have to pair them correctly with fat-based dressings," said Mario Ferruzzi, the study's lead author and a Purdue associate professor of food science. "If you have a salad with a fat-free dressing, there is a reduction in calories, but you lose some of the benefits of the vegetables."

In the test, 29 people were fed salads dressed with butter as a saturated fat, canola oil as a monounsaturated fat and corn oil as a polyunsaturated fat. Each salad was served with 3 grams, 8 grams or 20 grams of fat from dressing.

The soybean oil rich in polyunsaturated fat was the most dependent on dose. The more fat on the salad, the more carotenoids the subjects absorbed. The saturated fat butter was also dose-dependent, but to a lesser extent.

Monounsaturated fat-rich dressings, such as canola and olive oil-based dressings, promoted the equivalent carotenoid absorption at 3 grams of fat as it did 20 grams, suggesting that this lipid source may be a good choice for those craving lower fat options but still wanting to optimize absorption of health-promoting carotenoids from fresh vegetables.

"Even at the lower fat level, you can absorb a significant amount of carotenoids with monounsaturated fat-rich canola oil," Ferruzzi said. "Overall, pairing with fat matters. You can absorb significant amounts of carotenoids with saturated or polyunsaturated fats at low levels, but you would see more carotenoid absorption as you increase the amounts of those fats on a salad."

The findings build on a 2004 Iowa State University study that determined carotenoids were more bioavailable -- absorbed by the intestines -- when paired with full-fat dressing as opposed to low-fat or fat-free versions. Ferruzzi; Wayne Campbell, a Purdue professor of nutrition science; Shellen Goltz, a Purdue graduate student in food science; and their collaborators, Chureeporn Chitchumroonchokchai and Mark L. Failla at Ohio State University, are the first to study different types of fats in differing amounts in human subjects.

Ferruzzi and colleagues will next work on understanding how meal patterning affects nutrient absorption. He is trying to determine whether people absorb more nutrients if they eat vegetables at one time or if consumption is spread throughout the day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture funded the research.

But what we remember the Reagan Decade for was its excesses and it?s this era that ?Rock of Ages? sought to capture in both its current movie form and its original Broadway ?jukebox musical? presentation.

But enough time has passed for those of us who came of age then that we can now say: Enough with trying to pretend all we liked were the ?quality? artists. Enough with the posing, to use an old ?80s word. Enough with pretending all that we slapped on the old turntable were platters by critically-approved artists like Billy Bragg, Husker Du, and the Replacements. Yeah, I liked them too, but that?s not all I liked. And my guess is that if you were a pop fan then, that?s not all you liked either.

Maybe you harbored a secret crush on the ballad stylings of Phil Collins or Lionel Ritchie. Or maybe when no one was looking you popped cassettes of Poison and Warrant into the tape deck that your friends assumed only took Smiths and Cure tapes. Or did you secretly lip-sync along to New Kids on the Block a la Tom Cruise in ?Risky Business??

Back in the 1980s, niche marketing was only in its infancy, so we pretty much all heard the same songs and saw the same videos. And no matter how jaded or sophisticated you were, chances are you grew to love a few of them as they oozed out of the radio and MTV. Yes, the former teen pop star who sang ?Shake Your Love,? ?Lost in Your Eyes? and other prom favorites. She was the one rock star I imagined I could be, but for reasons that went beyond that obvious assumption about gender and sexual orientation everyone is probably making right now.

Why did I love Debbie Gibson? Let me count the reasons. First, she was young and suburban, so seemed approachable, not like some icon from another galaxy. Second, she put out squeaky-clean pop that I felt followed the tradition of the oldies artists I liked (ones that sang songs like ?Be True to Your School?).

Finally, Gibson eschewed the gloom and doom, dressed-in-black, life-is-bleak worldview of so many other artists back then. The video for her almost-hit ?We Could Be Together? came off like the ultimate fun-for-all field trip, with her and her band piling into a school bus and setting off for a world of (G-Rated) adventure.

Gibson appears in ?Rock of Ages? along with Sebastian Bach of Skid Row and the lead singers of Xtreme and REO Speedwagon. To anyone who despised this stuff back in the day, the movie will probably seem like slow torture. But to anyone who wasn?t above sitting around and watching MTV, the movie will be like a homecoming of sorts (and enough people like it that the soundtrack just made its debut at the top of the Billboard soundtrack charts).

So now, dear reader, it?s your turn to ?fess up. I?ll fully admit that Debbie Gibson is my idea of a fab pop artist and I?ve even been known to defend her commercial flop of a third album, ?Anything is Possible,? as High Art.
