The next iPhone: What we think we know

12 hrs.

Apple rumors ? or tech rumors in general, for that matter???are frustrating. They tend to come from anonymous sources who may or may not be familiar with matters, briefed on plans or even awake. They can sometimes spin out of control and lead people to believe?that the next iPhone will cost $800?or be made of a material that's not quite ready for primetime.

In an attempt to throw some sanity into the world, we're going to review the latest iPhone rumors ? and tell you which are likely to be true.

Ready? Let's go!

What will it be called?
It would be shocking if the next-generation iPhone is?announced as anything other than the "new iPhone" when it is finally revealed to the world.

Calling it the "iPhone 5" not only clashes with what appears to be Apple's current naming strategy ??think "new iPad," new iMac," "new Apple TV," "new MacBook Pro," and so on???but it would also be awkwardly inaccurate. As we've said in the past,?the next-generation iPhone will be the sixth-generation device in the line, following the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

And of course, skipping right to "iPhone 6" would be inelegant, not to mention bear a faint whiff of Microsoft's naming schemes.

When will it?arrive?
Both?iMore's Rene Ritchie?and? All Things D's?John Paczkowski?? people with credible track?records when it comes to nailing the dates of Apple events?? say that Apple will be holding a very special event on Sept. 12.??Ritchie additionally suggests that the new smartphone will ship nine days after it is announced, on Sept. 21.?

These dates do line up with?what we've been hearing for a while?? that the next-generation iPhone will hit shelves in the fall?? so we're circling them on our calendars for now.

How will it look?
We?suspect that the next-generation iPhone will be pretty darn similar to the iPhone 4S,?but with a slightly thinner and larger screen. It sounds like its display will be?4 inches instead of 3.5 inches?and?more elongated, so that the aspect ratio is wider.

The folks at?9to5Mac recently posted some photos?showing what is supposedly the equivalent of a fully-assembled next-generation iPhone ? and judging by those, our?guesses might be right on the money.

Some reports have suggested?that?the next iPhone may be made out of "Liquidmetal," a strong, durable and versatile material. But Dr. Atakan Peker, the creator of the material says that this rumor likely won't pan out. He explains that the material is most certainly good enough for the iPhone, but that the manufacturing techniques and infrastructure to implement it properly, and on a large scale, do not exist just yet.

What sort of guts will it have?
9to5 Mac's Mark Gurman says?that prototype versions of the next-generation iPhone are rocking 1GB of RAM (which would double what is believed to be the current device's amount of RAM).?

When it comes to cameras,?TechRadar's John McCann offers?that Sony's new back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensors would be perfect for the next-generation iPhone as they are ideal for super-duper-slim phones. (And slim it will be,?if you believe the Wall Street Journal's sources.)?

iMore's Rene Ritchie?suggests?that the device will be 4G LTE compatible???just like the new iPad.

The new smartphone will also likely?use a smaller 19-pin port?rather than the wider 30-in port found on current iPhones, iPads and iPods. (Say goodbye to your old chargers?? or hello to some awkward adapter???if that turns out to be the case.)

What did we learn?
We always say this, but it's true:?"A rumor's not a rumor that doesn't die."

The particularly persistent rumors tend to pan out ... except when they don't. So just pick your favorites and let's keep speculating until the cows come home?? or until?the Apple execs come to the Moscone Center.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Pfizer beats Street; shares flirt with five-year high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings, helped by cuts to its research and marketing spending, and said it may fully divest its animal health unit following an initial public offering of up to 20 percent of the business.

Shares of the largest U.S. drugmaker, which is on the rebound from a decade of failures to produce big-selling new medicines, jumped as much as 3.2 percent to levels not seen since November 2007.

One of its more promising treatments, a rheumatoid arthritis drug known as tofacitinib, is awaiting approval from U.S. health regulators. Pfizer said on Tuesday that the Food and Drug Administration had asked for a "routine" analysis of trial data for the drug, which could delay a decision by three months or more beyond an August 21 agency deadline.

"We started investigating this product 20 years ago, so another three months is not that important," Chief Executive Ian Read said in an interview. If approved, tofacitinib could become a more convenient alternative to Abbott Laboratories Inc's $8 billion-a-year injectable Humira arthritis treatment.

Pfizer said in June that it planned to separate its animal health unit into a standalone company as it focused more closely on its core pharmaceuticals business. On Tuesday, it said it would ask regulators by mid-August to approve an initial public offering of up to 20 percent of the unit, to be called Zoetis.

Pfizer's animal health business, with $4.2 billion in revenue last year, has more than 9,000 employees and sells medicines, vaccines and other products for livestock and pets.

"If the IPO is successfully completed, which we are targeting for the first half of 2013, we will have a variety of options to achieve a full separation of Zoetis," Read said in a statement.

Pfizer shares have risen more than 25 percent in the past year, as investors welcomed the move to divest animal health and its baby formula business. Much of the proceeds are being returned to shareholders through share buybacks and dividends.

In April, the company agreed to sell its baby formula business to Nestle SA for $11.85 billion in cash, with the deal to be completed in the first half of 2013. The business was treated in the second quarter as a discontinued operation.

WRINGING MORE SAVINGS FROM WYETH DEAL

Pfizer said it earned $3.25 billion, or 43 cents per share, in the second quarter, compared with $2.61 billion, or 33 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding special items, profit was 62 cents per share, compared with analysts' average forecast of 54 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Atlantic Equities analyst Richard Purkiss said Pfizer's operating profit margins improved 4 percentage points beyond expectations in the second quarter, helped by a wide variety of cost cuts, including ones related to its $67 billion purchase of U.S. rival Wyeth in October 2009.

"That means management is doing a good job in integrating Wyeth and restructuring the pharmaceuticals business," said Purkiss. Pfizer's experimental drugs, including tofacitinib, are another reason to hold Pfizer shares, he said.

Investors are also awaiting trial data from Pfizer's experimental treatment for Alzheimer's disease, bapineuzumab, deemed to have blockbuster sales potential if it can slow progression of the memory-robbing disease.

Earlier this month, Pfizer said the drug had failed to help cognition in one of two large North American trials, but the company and partner Johnson & Johnson are hoping for better results in another late-stage North American study, the results of which could be announced before September 11.

Pfizer's revenue fell 9 percent to $15.06 billion in the quarter, hurt by generic competition for cholesterol fighter Lipitor, but it topped Wall Street expectations of $14.87 billion.

Sales would have fallen 6 percent if not for the stronger dollar, which lowers the value of sales in overseas markets.

Pfizer reaffirmed its 2012 profit view of $2.14 to $2.24 per share, excluding special items, a decline of no more than 7 percent from a year earlier despite plunging demand for Lipitor.

Sales of Lipitor, which lost patent protection in November, fell 53 percent to $1.22 billion in the quarter. Sales of nerve pain treatment Lyrica jumped 14 percent to $1.04 billion, while sales of rheumatoid arthritis drug Enbrel rose 8 percent to $988 million, helping cushion the Lipitor decline

Pfizer shares were up 2.2 percent at $24.24 on Tuesday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange, off an earlier high at $24.48.

Skin cancer identified for the first time in wild fish populations

Widespread skin cancer has been identified for the first time in wild marine fish populations, new research has shown.

A collaborative study between Newcastle University, UK, and the Australian Institute of Marine Science published today in the academic journal PLoS ONE - reveals the incidence of melanoma in the coral trout, a species found on the Great Barrier Reef and directly beneath the world's largest hole in the ozone layer.

This is the first time skin cancer has been diagnosed in wild fish populations and the team, led by Newcastle University's Dr Michael Sweet, say the appearance of the melanoma is almost identical to that found in humans.

"Further work needs to be carried out to establish the exact cause of the cancer but having eliminated other likely factors such as microbial pathogens and marine pollution, UV radiation appears to be the likely cause," explains Dr Sweet.

"Studying disease in wild fish populations is very time-consuming and costly so it's hard to say how long the disease has been around. However, what we do know is that it is now widespread in the coral trout population effecting three different species of this type of fish and we would not be surprised to find it in other species as well."

The study, which involved experts from Newcastle University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science and James Cook University, Australia, looked at Plectropomus leopardus, otherwise known as the common coral trout.

The coral trout is an iconic and highly valued species that occurs throughout the western Pacific and in Australia supports a high-value fishery on the Great Barrier Reef.

Diseased fish were caught in two locations in the southern Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Heron Island and One Tree Island but its occurrence throughout the rest of its range is currently unknown. Anecdotal evidence suggests minimal occurrence in other regions of the GBR and in other coral trout species, but further research is required to confirm this.

Of the 136 fish sampled, 20 (15%) showed dark lesions on the skin the lesions covered as little as 5% of the skin ranging to full coverage and an almost entirely black appearance.

Dr Sweet said the numbers were significant.

"The individuals we looked at had extensive but only surface melanomas," he explained.

"This means the cancer had not spread any deeper than the skin so apart from the surface lesions the fish were basically healthy.

"Once the cancer spreads further you would expect the fish to become quite sick, becoming less active and possibly feeding less, hence less likely to be caught. This suggests the actual percentage affected by the cancer is likely to be higher than observed in this study."

UV-induced melanoma in fish has until now only been seen under laboratory conditions and has been used as a model to study the progress of human skin cancer due to the similarities in the disease.

In the lab, hybridised fish were found to be more susceptible to UV radiation due to exposure of the so-called 'Xmrk' gene. In the case of coral trout cross-breeding or hybridisation may also be occurring and play a role in the coral trout's susceptibility to the disease.

Dr Michelle Heupel from the Australian Institute of Marine Science stated: "This is a crucial finding in an iconic and high value reef species.

"Given climate change scenarios and continuing alteration of coral reef environments understanding the cause of this disease is important to continued conservation and management of reefs and their inhabitants."

The next step in the study is to look at a much larger sample and determine the extent of disease presence and causation within the populations.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine Helps You Recover From Your Fort

The following is a guest blog from Terry Fox,?L.Ac, RMT . Terry owns?Artesian Spring Oriental Medicine right here in Fort Collins. From my experience in working with Terry, he is very passionate and dedicated about helping his clients become healthier through Traditional Chinese Medicine (or TCM), and I highly recommend his services. Enjoy!

So I have to admit that this is my first time to guest on a blog. I am quite honored that Dennis asked me to be a contributor for Core Fitness and Nutrition.

For those of you unfamiliar with me, my expertise is in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). So what can TCM offer you on your fitness journey with Core Fitness and Nutrition? Simply this: Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help you recover more quickly from your workouts, prevent and treat injuries and help you in achieving your fitness goals.

The history behind TCM is long and rich. Much of it stems from the martial arts traditions of the Shaolin and Wu Dang schools of Kung Fu. The warriors of Shaolin and Wu Dang were (and still are) extreme athletes with very rigorous training regimens.? Acupuncture protocols and Chinese herbal remedies were developed to help treat their myriad of training injuries and help speed up recovery times.

Currently, there are studies being conducted regarding the effects of acupuncture on athletic performance. Here is an example of a recent study:

Effects of Acupuncture Stimulation on Recovery Ability of Male Elite Basketball Athletes

http://www.sportsmpn.com/EBM/Effects%20of%20Acupuncture%20Stimulation.pdf

In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, Qi (the body?s internal energy) and Blood need to circulate smoothly throughout the body in a constant and consistent fashion for optimal wellness. If the circulation is poor, then health problems occur. Regular, moderate exercise stimulates the movement of Qi and Blood and promotes proper circulation.

Conversely, over-exercising can create exhaustion of Qi and Blood. This will cause other problems to manifest. As red-blooded Americans, we love to do things to the extreme, including exercise. So finding the appropriate balance of exercise is important.

This is why exercises like Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong are prevalent in Chinese culture. They are gentle and slow moving, but they also get the heart rate up, promote flexibility and strengthen tendons and bone. They offer that balance, yet still give a person quite the physical challenge.

Here?s a beautiful example of Wu Dang Tai Yi Qi Gong:

As we all know, each individual is unique. We all have our own genetic strengths and weaknesses. Depending upon those pre-existing conditions, each body responds to rigorous activity differently. For athletes (and anyone else who exercises hard), the most commonly affected TCM organ systems are the Spleen, the Liver, and the Kidney. In TCM organ theory, the organs may have the same names as those in modern medicine but can vastly differ in function.

The Spleen in TCM is a major contributor in producing Qi and Blood. It also is responsible for giving muscles their strength. However, over-work, worry, and poor dietary habits can injure the Spleen function. When Spleen function is impaired, chronic sluggishness, low energy, fuzzy headedness and muscle weakness can manifest.

The Liver in TCM is responsible for the free flow of Qi in the body. It also promotes the health of tendons and ligaments. However, stress, over-work and ?burning the candle at both ends? will weaken the function of the Liver. When Liver function is impaired, chronic anger, migraine headaches and tendon/ligament injuries will become apparent.

The Kidneys in TCM are considered to be the batteries of the body. They store our essential energy. Over-work, fear and a hectic lifestyle will deplete Kidney function. When the Kidneys are depleted, problems like chronic low back pain, knee pain, sexual dysfunction and chronic fatigue will show up.

Luckily, a Licensed Acupuncturist can help you assess what pre-existing conditions you may have so that any organ dysfunctions can be prevented. If you already suffer from organ dysfunction, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can benefit you. With a proper treatment protocol, including all five branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Herbal Medicine, Diet, and Exercise), your health can greatly improve and so will your athletic performance.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we strive to treat both the branch and root. Or to put it another way, TCM treats not only the symptom but also the cause of the problem.

Acupuncture and massage therapy address the body from the outside in, alleviating pain and soreness. Chinese herbal medicine and dietary theory treat the body from the inside out, promoting proper organ function and optimal circulation of Qi and Blood. You will begin to feel more energetic, illness and injury will resolve and you will be able to aim higher in your athletic goals.

If you?re already a paragon of health, Traditional Chinese Medicine can still be of great benefit to you.

Why?

It adheres to the premise of prevention. The best practitioner is not the one who treats their sick patients. The best practitioner is the one who teaches their patients how to avoid getting sick in the first place. I prefer to educate my patients so that they can make informed decisions that will promote their longevity. As a Licensed Acupuncturist and bodywork professional, I want to see you vibrant, vital, and healthy well into the future.

You?ve made an excellent choice aligning yourself with Core Fitness and Nutrition, and I congratulate you! The knowledge and experience you gain from Dennis and his personal trainers will only advance your cause. However, if you feel like something is holding you back from achieving your fitness goals, it would be my pleasure to put the power of Traditional Chinese Medicine at your service.
